Now, Zee Moves Delhi HC Against Blinkit Over Alleged Copyright Violation

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) has moved the Delhi High Court against quick commerce major Blinkit, alleging content uploaded on the quick commerce giant’s Instagram account infringes its copyright. 

In the court, Zee placed on record screen recordings of “infringing works” created and uploaded by Blinkit on its Instagram account. The court allowed this application and directed that summons be issued to Blink Commerce Private Limited, which operates Blinkit, and listed the matter before the court on August 14.  

The High Court further exempted Zee from mandatory pre-institution mediation under the Commercial Courts Act, observing that it had sought urgent relief. An ex parte ad interim injunction has also been granted to the media giant.

With the commercial suit now registered, Blinkit has been directed to file its written statement within 30 days of receiving the summons. Zee will be entitled to file its replication thereafter.

Inc42 has reached out to Blinkit and Zee Entertainment for comments on the development. The story will be updated based on their responses. Mint was the first to report the development. 

This is the third time that Zee has approached courts over alleged copyright infringement this year. 

In May, Zee Entertainment filed a suit against Nykaa in the Delhi High Court, alleging the online fashion and beauty marketplace used its copyrighted songs in Instagram reels without permission to promote products. 

Earlier this month, the HC passed a John Doe order directing Meta to take down multiple Facebook URLs allegedly hosting ZEEL’s unauthorised content.

Separately, ZEEL also dragged Reliance-Disney joint venture JioStar to the Delhi High Court, alleging unauthorised use of its copyrighted music after licence expiry. 

While it sought monetary compensation of ₹2 Cr and $3 Mn from Nykaa and JioStar, respectively, there is no mention of a financial damage cost mentioned in the case of Blinkit.
