AI giant OpenAI is reportedly in discussions with Reliance Industries and other domestic data centre companies to bring global supercomputing joint venture The Stargate Project to India.

Yotta Data Services, E2E Networks, CtrlS Datacenters and Sify Technologies are among the domestic companies the ChatGPT parent is in talks with, ET reported.

Additionally, OpenAI has been holding discussions with Reliance, which plans to build one of the world’s largest data centres in Gujarat’s Jamnagar, for over six months, the report added.

Notably, it was reported earlier this year that OpenAI was in talks with Reliance and other global investors for its $40 Bn funding round, which could see each of the company invest hundreds of millions of dollars in the ChatGPT parent.

Inc42 has reached out to OpenAI and Reliance for comments on the latest development. The story will be updated on receiving their responses.

The report said that OpenAI has held discussions with the aforementioned companies on the capacity of data centres, their location, availability of power, among others, as The Stargate Project begins to take shape.

Led by SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle and MGX, The Stargate Project aims to invest $500 Bn to build AI infrastructure.

The report said that the Indian government has requested OpenAI to invest a part of the $500 Bn project in India and store the data of Indians locally as the country is a key market for the company.

This comes a week after a report said that OpenAI is looking for local partners to set up a data centre in India with a capacity of at least 1 GW.
