Tesla Begins Homologation Process Of Two Electric Car Models

Ahead of its Indian entry, Elon Musk-led automaker Tesla has reportedly kicked off the process of homologation for at least two of its electric car models.

For context, homologation refers to the process of certifying whether a vehicle is worthy of plying on Indian roads and complies with all necessary local mandates such as emission, safety and roadworthiness.

Sources told NDTV Profit that the Indian arm of the electric vehicle maker, Tesla India Motor & Energy Pvt. Ltd., has submitted two new applications for homologation of the Model Y and Model 3 cars in India. Of this, one was reportedly approved by concerned authorities recently.

As per the report, Tesla has so far submitted nine homologation applications in India, of which seven were filed previously with a certifying body for test cars.

This comes just days after the EV maker reportedly signed a lease agreement to open its first showroom, covering a space of 4,003 sq ft, in Mumbai’s plush Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Tesla already paid a security deposit of INR 2.11 Cr at the time of registration of the deal, and will pay INR 3.87 Cr in rent for the first year for the premises, located on the ground floor of 2 North Avenue in BKC.

Last month, reports also surfaced that the company commenced shipping a few thousand electric cars to a port near Mumbai. The process is expected to be completed over the course of next few months.

Meanwhile, Tesla plans to sell its cars across three major Indian cities, namely New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, by the third quarter of the calendar year. Going forward, the EV giant is reportedly looking to work on setting up its own manufacturing unit in the country, and has approached state governments of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra to establish the unit.
