From information technology to edtech, almost all the sectors in India have been tapping generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) for various downstream applications. Nearly, 70.85% of the country’s teachers believe that GenAI will help in shaping up the future of the education landscape, beating even the impact of smartphone revolution, according to a report by learning solutions company TeamLease EdTech.

The report’s findings are based on a survey of 6,000 teachers across India.

It is pertinent to mention here that the smartphone revolution, which is deemed to have started around 2010 in India, saw the availability of cheap smartphones and cellular data in every household. This enabled an unprecedented boom of internet users from 100 million in 2010 to 400 million by 2015, according to the Internet and Mobile Association of India.

The TeamLease EdTech report further says that with more than 60% of teachers actively harnessing AI tools, the intersection of technology and learning has become a focal point, propelling the nation’s education system.

For 64.87% of teachers, GenAI has the potential to transform learning experiences and will help in boosting personalised learning and student engagement.

However, the report also points out risks linked to GenAI, which include diminishing creativity and overreliance on technology. So, to address these concerns, 87.85% of teachers underscore the need for government monitoring and regulation for much awareness on the ethical implications of AI integration.

India’s GenAI startups, numbering over 70, are at the forefront of this transformative journey. According to Inc42’s report titled India’s Generative AI Startup Landscape, 2023, the country’s GenAI market will be growing exponentially in the next few years. It is projected to surpass $17 Bn by 2030 from $1.1 Bn in 2023, growing at a CAGR of 48%.

Considering that the pandemic has brought plenty of momentum for edtech adoption in India, the market size of edtech was estimated to grow 3.7x in 5 year period from $2.8 Bn in 2020 to $10.4 Bn in 2025.

The edtech sector has lost its sheen after controversies around big edtech unicorns like Byjus and Unacademy as well as layoffs in the sector. However, an alternative knowledge source for students has been enabled by the GenAI to resolve their doubts.

Moreover, with social media content creators providing content around AI usage, GenAI adoption has become common among students as well as teachers as popular tools like ChatGPT (OpenAI) and BARD (a GenAI chatbot from Google) can easily perform complex problems.

As India aims towards a $1 trillion digital economy by 2025-26, the government actively solidifies its position as a global player in the AI technology space. Collaborations with countries, such as the UAE, underscore its commitment towards AI, robotics, and space systems.

In this era of unprecedented transformations, it will be interesting to see if Generative AI emerges as the catalyst for reshaping classrooms, teachers and policies.
